Slapdash

Small things thrown together.

9/11

If you can spare some time or money, this is a good day to do something to help people live together better. Here are a few small ideas I had:

  • Learn about how people live in a place you’ve never been. Tell your friends what you’ve learned.
  • Attend a service for a religion that isn’t yours. (Tomorrow could also be a good day for this.)
  • Volunteer.
  • If you hear people speaking unjustly, don’t just complain to your friends; engage, respectfully. (This is hard!)
  • Just smile at strangers more than you usually do. Non-creepy smiles only, please.

Money can help people, too. Some of the people who could really use help right now are millions of flood victims in Pakistan. (I like Mercy Corps and Doctors Without Borders.) Haiti is rebuilding. People around the world lack basic human rights and water. Really, if you have money, finding someone to give it to is the easy part.
