The donut dividend
edkohler:
adamisacson:
1 free daily donut for every American = (310.5 million Americans) * (79¢ per donut) * (365 days) = $89.5 billion/year.
That’s less than 1/8 of the annual Defense Department budget ($749 billion).
If eating a donut a day gets us out of Iraq, I’ll have a Chocolate Dip.

Zadie Smith’s contribution to Something Borrowed in last week’s New Yorker made her so aggressively unlikeable to me. But I guess money is ugly.

Fun fact: “[T]he $1.1 trillion cost over the next 10 years of the Medicare prescription drug program, which the Republican-controlled Congress adopted in 2003, by itself would add more to the deficit than the combined costs of the bailout, the stimulus and the health care law.” (via MNpublius)

“Y’know what your problem is?” says Giblets. “You’re always looking back. ‘Oh boo hoo, remember the Good Ol’ Days, back when we lived on the ground and we weren’t on fire.’ Well Giblets lives for today, and we’re air people now! We live in the air! At least for the next several seconds.”

I don’t know how they let this man be vice president, but I love Joe Biden.

A predator walks: Letting child rapist off without... →
The perpetrator was “a juvenile justice counselor who sexually assaulted youngsters he was supposed to protect.” He raped them in the Manhattan Family Court building. Supposedly, maybe, the weak plea bargain was because the case against him was shaky. But even had he been convicted, the maximum sentence — for raping teenagers who were entrusted by the city to his care — was four...
